In the Notebooks Madonna dell’ Orto, Nadali & Vianello (1999) Tav.4/9, is frequently cited merely as an indication of location.
In the Venetian Index at Works, 11.395 Ruskin is more concerned with the paintings by Tintoretto in the Madonna dell’ Orto than with its architecture. The building itself he describes there as ‘an interesting example of Renaissance Gothic, the traceries of the windows being very rich and quaint’.
Ruskin’s account of its history at Notebook M2 p.31 is taken from Zanotto (1847) pp.152-3. At Notebook M2 p.10 the date is given as 1399; at Notebook M2 p.13L it is associated with the Porta dell Carta, though the date is again given as 1399. At Notebook M p.123 he expresses some surprise at the late date given to it by Selvatico.
Its tracery is discussed at Notebook M p.124 and Notebook M pp.150f. and its niches at Notebook M p.210. There is a detailed account, with drawings, of niches and tracery at House Book 2 pp.33L and 33; House Book 2 pp.34L and 34. There is also a drawing at Bit Book p.72 which is cited in the index at Notebook M2 p.195 as being of Madonna dell’ Orto.
Its door is referred to at Notebook M2 p.31, and at Notebook M2 p.197L there is an index entry for the door of Madonna dell’ Orto which cites Door Book p.33 and Door Book p.34L.
