Compare Ruskin’s second thoughts at Notebook M p.182L where it is read as: ‘lune cancer domu * t p'bet iorbe signoru *’. The last word is not ‘signora’ (an Italian woman), the form in the Ruskin Library Transcript T7A, but ‘signoru’, a form of the genitive plural of ‘signum’. Perhaps something like the house of the crab (Cancer) provides a place for (pbet) the moon (lune) in the cycle (orbe) of signs ' (signoru) on the assumption that ‘pbet’ is a contracted form of ‘praebet’.
