‘life’ is the reading of the Ruskin Library Transcript T7A.
Proverbs Chapter 12, Verse 19 in the King James version reads:
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Ruskin's quotations are not always accurate. However, ‘lip’ is a plausible reading of the manuscript, and it seems more likely that the Ruskin Library Transcript T7A is in error, perhaps explained by the fact that Ruskin elsewhere associates ‘life’ and ‘truth’.
