inde x iovi dona pise simul atq3* cirona

Ruskin’s reading at Works, 10.413 is Inde Jovi' Dona Pises Simul ATQ* CIRONA. A paraphrase of the meaning might be: ‘Then the house(?s) of Jupiter, Pisces and Sagittarius’. Chiron as the centaur drawing a bow is clearly Sagittarius. It is interesting that in the published version Ruskin cuts out the reference to Dante made at Notebook M p.181. There too he has problems with the meaning of the word he reads as ‘dona’, and seems to suggests that it might be read as a form of the verb ‘dominare’ to rule; there are also precedents for ‘doma’ meaning dwelling.
