The reading of the Ruskin Library Transcript T7A is ‘mere’ but ‘early’ seems better. The point is that details of an early, more noble architecture are misapplied here in later work. For a similar point about the roses of Coutances Cathedral misapplied in later architecture see Works, 8.160.
