E (Aries)? MaTi. 7ac e scarpio partis

See Notebook M p.181L, and particularly the drawing there, for a more accurate version of what Ruskin had seen. The inscription is perhaps to be read E ARIES MATI ACUE SCORPIO PARTIS. It is paraphrased at Works, 10.414 as ‘Mars in his houses Aries and Scorpio’ but no attempt is made there to transcribe or construe it. The first vowel of the word transcribed as ‘scarpio’ is ambiguous, but it is difficult to think that in this context Ruskin would not have read the word as ‘scorpio’.
