On the question of categorisation of an arch as stilted here settled by measurement compare the material on the ‘Remer House’ at Notebook M p.82 and Works, 36.106 [n/a] where the problem is whether the apparently stilted arch represents what was first built or is the result of settlement or slippage. The problem is compounded by the fact that buildings constantly change. It is not therefore certain that what was seen and measured by Ruskin is what is to be seen now. The question is important in the context of the notebooks as Ruskin sees stilted arches as characteristic of Byzantine style.
