Cividale

The Adoration of the Magi at the ‘Tempietto Longobardo’ at Cividale (Friuli) is an example of the 8th Century work associated with the Lombard invaders. It illustrates the deep cut lines to which Selvatico refers in the passage cited by Ruskin at Notebook M p.ii, the ‘Proutishness’ perhaps to which Ruskin refers at Notebook M p.9L when writing of the Lombard work of the pulpit of S. Ambrogio in Milan. For Selvatico it is crude and incompetent. For Ruskin at Works, 16.277 [n/a] the Lombard figures of Eve and the Serpent on the pulpit of S. Ambrogio, Milan, mark the beginning of life in Italian art.
