Byzantine Bandwork

On bandwork see Fairholt 1854 s.v. ‘strap’ in OED: ‘strapwork ... a peculiar kind of ornament....which consists of a narrow fillet or band, folded and crossed and occasionally interlaced with another’. Fairholt suggested that it was particularly characteristic of the 15th and 16th Century in Flanders and Germany. What were perceived in 1856 to be typically Byzantine examples of strapwork or bandwork, though the terms are not used there, can be seen in Jones (1856) Chapter 4, and plates XXIX and XXX.
