arcade C.C

The reference is to the Cortile della Canonica, though it seems probable that here as elsewhere Ruskin is using ‘c.c.’ to refer to the cinquecento. The cortile was commissioned by the Duke of Milan in the last decade of the 15th Century, and so, although Cinquecento in style not strictly of that century. The tree trunk shafts combine a tribute to the patron with a reference to the account in Vitruvius of the origins of the classical style in primitive wooden buildings.
