Agassiz

The manuscript reads ‘Agassiz’. The reference is to Louis Agassiz, 1807-1873. Agassiz was a glaciologist, who showed that glaciers move, and a geologist. At Works, 19.154 [n/a] Ruskin offers faint praise of the woodcuts for his five volume ‘Recherches sur les poissons fossiles’ (Neuchâtel 1833-43), and at Works, 4.107 [n/a] gives a typically immoderate assessment of what he saw as the consequences of Agassiz’s inability to draw.
