Compare Notebook M p.19 on the tomb of San Pietro Martire. It seems reasonable to speculate that the passage at Notebook M2 p.20backL was not written before Ruskin’s arrival in Milan. ‘the San Pietro Martier’ in the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B is presumably the result of the transcriber’s first attempt to read ‘San’ which resulted in ‘the’, followed by a recognition that ‘San’ was the correct reading.
