Novel, published in 1754, by Samuel Richardson,1689-1761. For Ruskin's references to it see Works, 35.308, Works, 36.193 [n/a]. It is set in aristocratic circles in England and in Italy. A love affair cannot lead to marriage because of religious differences, and a woman’s unhappiness leads to mental breakdown. However all is happily resolved, at least in the novel.
