‘show the efforts’ is inserted above words which have been struck out. ‘and’ appears in The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B after ‘efforts’, but in the manuscript seems to have been struck out.
From the manuscript it appears that Ruskin's first version was ‘efforts - and some are successful ones’; his second version was ‘efforts and many successful ones’; his third version was ‘efforts (often successful)’.
The published version at Works, 9.428 is ‘effort (often successful)’.
