({shaft of} grey granite)

The brackets are omitted in the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B. ‘shaft of’ is a later insertion by Ruskin. Perhaps Ruskin first wrote ‘(of grey granite for greater strength I suppose)’, and then added ‘shafts of’ and closed the brackets after ‘granite’, not noticing that his parenthesis had continued up to ‘suppose’.

‘greay’ is a mistake in The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B for ‘grey’, which is clear in the manuscript.
