The reference is to the dating of Torcello Cathedral to the beginning of the 11th century; the sentence on Notebook M2 p.20L is set opposite the reference to Gally Knight on Notebook M2 p.20. Selvatico gives 1008 as the date of the rebuilding of the cathedral and cites at p. 14 the Latin of the Chron. Venet. Sagorninus for its dereliction and restoration: “Totam Sanctae Mariae domum et ecclesiam iam pene vetustate consumptam recreare studiosissime fecit.”
See Works, 9.4 for Ruskin's opinion of Selvatico. It is clear from the Notebooks that Ruskin drew most heavily on the published work of Lindsay, Selvatico, and Zanotto (in Venezia e le sue lagune), as well as research on his behalf and guidance in relation to the archives by Rawdon Brown and Giambattista Lorenzi. Others to whom he refers include Cicogna (though some at least of the references to inscriptions recorded in Cicogna are from footnotes in Selvatico), Cicognara (of whom he disapproved), Mutinelli (1838), and Sansovino (1663). However his claim at Works, 9.4 that his account of buildings was based on personal examination and measurement is plainly justified by the Notebooks.
