San Nicolo

The notes on these pages are from Venezia e le sue lagune produced for Venezia Consiglio Communale by a commission under Count Giovanni Correr, Venezia 1847. Francesco Zanotto was responsible for ‘Descrizione della Città’ II.ii.1-482. The Roman numerals refer to his numbering system for churches, and the account of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, Nadali & Vianello (1999) Tav. 38, begins at II.ii.158.

Compare Notebook M p.50. There San Nicolo de’ Tolentini is clearly what Ruskin wrote. It seems unlikely, however, that this is the church he had in mind. The architect was Scamozzi and the church dates from the end of the 16th Century. In the Venetian Index Ruskin called San Nicolo de’ Tolentini, Nadali & Vianello (1999) Tav.27, not without justification, ‘one of the basest and coldest works of the late renaissance’ Works, 11.434. Perhaps Ruskin at Notebook M p.50, as at Notebook M2 p.31, was thinking of the much earlier church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli.
