Parrebbe, of the school of the Leopardo

This is strange. There is a clear comma omitted in the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B. It reads as if the relief, presumably the one of the Virgin with St Francis and St Antony, is believed to be the work of someone called Parrebbe, who belonged to the school of an artist called Leopardo.

Ruskin is drawing on Zanotto (1847) p.120, which reads: ‘Parebbe della scuola più nobile del Leopardo, o di altro vissuto nell’ età più’. However, ‘parebbe’ means ‘it would seem’, and Leopardo is perhaps Alessandro Leopardi. A possible translation would be: ‘It looks rather like school of Leopardi’. Ruskin ignores the judgment of value in the second part of Zanotto’s comment. See the reference to the Vendramin tomb at Notebook M2 p.39. That too was attributed to Leopardi.
