Lindsay, I.43, is writing about the earliest Christian art in Rome, and mentions ‘a lamb with a cross on its head, symbolical of the atonement...and occasionally a line of sheep below, representing the apostles’. The word ‘Roman’ might in more recent usage have replaced the word ‘Romanesque’ here.
