‘on the’ is unclear in the manuscript. ‘a’ is a probable reading for ‘on’ which is the version in The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B, and the word transcribed as ‘the’ could perhaps be seen as a word that has been struck out, perhaps ‘th’, perhaps 'rib'. If the latter the suggestion is that Ruskin originally wrote ‘when there is a rib’, but then felt the need to define the ‘rib’ more precisely, and struck out its first appearance.
