Lindsay’s point (Vol.1, p.52) is that full grown figures of angels appear in the mosaics of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome but not in the Catacombs where “the nearest approach to them are the child-like genii, that sport among the vine-branches, bearing the strongest resemblance to those in the sculptures of Baalbec and other heathen temples.”
