This note is placed immediately opposite the side-heading ‘Religion’ and the reference to Francis Bacon on Notebook M2 p.186. The reference to Jeremiah seems to be to the last few verses of Jeremiah Chapter 9, and Jeremiah Chapter 22, Verse 14, should be seen in the context of Verses 13 to 17. Ruskin had referred to Jeremiah 22.14 at Notebook M2 p.109, apparently at the very end of his stay in Venice.
The end of Jeremiah Chapter 9 in the King James Version reads:
23. Thus saith the Lord, let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
25 Behold, the days come,saith the Lord, that I will punish all them that are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
26. Egypt and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
Jeremiah Chapter 22, verses 13 to 17, in the King James Version read:
13. Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
14. That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar and painted with vermilion.
15. Shalt thou reign because thou closest thyself in cedar? Did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?
16. He judged the cause of the poor and the needy; then it was well with him: was this not to know me? saith the Lord.
17. But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it
