I saw to day at Vittaux {a} p. 9. l. notebook. R

Vittaux is clear but now spelled Vitteaux. Vitteaux is about 50 kilometres West of Dijon; the church is St. Germain. ‘a’ is an insertion - perhaps ‘at’. The reference is to Notebook N p.9L but the form is unlike any other reference to Notebook N. Perhaps it is a lower case ‘n’ (Ruskin did call the notebook ‘N minor’; perhaps he thought of it as ‘R’ at this stage of the journey. In some entries he refers to it as ‘French Book’.
