This is an index only to M2 and the small notebooks. Ruskin did not include in it references to M. They are in a separate index starting at Notebook M p.220L. References to M2 are indicated either by the page number alone, or by the qualification ‘here’. Other references are given as:

• H₁ (written in the manuscript with a capital H above a ‘1’; the ‘1’ under the letter, not subscript after it as here) - Housebook 1

To indicate the left side of a double page Ruskin uses a lower case ‘l’; to avoid confusion with ‘1’ as a numeral the case has been changed here to an upper case ‘L’.
