The reading of the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B is: ‘If the Superimposition wavy 1st to facade’.
This is unclear in the manuscript, but it is difficult give any sense to ‘wavy 1st to facade’ the reading of the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B. ‘If the’ has been struck out and ‘superimposition’ then changed to ‘Superimposition’. It is certain that the words read as ‘wavy 1st to’ are a later insertion, probably with a stop after the word read as ‘wavy’. It is perhaps more likely that Ruskin first wrote, ‘If the Superimposition be frank and complete...’ followed by an explanation of what he meant. He then seems to have struck out ‘If the’, changed the first letter of ‘superimposition’, changed the word ‘be’ after ‘Superimposition’ to a caret mark, and added ‘may . 1st be’ to indicate that he was giving the first of his criteria for superimposition, i.e. that capitals should be straightforward (‘frank’) and complete.
