The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B reads ‘Deferico’ but the manuscript is clear. For the importance to Ruskin of Barbarossa’s submission to Pope Alexander III see Works, 9.25; Works, 9.29; Works, 11.92; and for a much later account Works, 34.350ff [n/a]. Barbarossa was crowned emperor at San Michele, Pavia.
