Coutances

Ruskin had been in Coutances on 12th September 1848 (Works, 8.xxixfn). Coutances Cathedral was discussed in Seven Lamps of Architecture at Works, 8.6 and Works, 8.88, where a comparison with Lisieux is made; Fig.3 of Plate III facing Works, 8.88; Works, 8.122; Works, 8.160 on roses which were good in their original context but spoiled by their association with bad modern buildings.

There are references to Coutances in Stones of Venice at Works, 9.131 on the ill judged piers of the apse; Figure 55 at Works, 9.316 on mouldings which appear elaborate but are little more than chamfers with small echoes on each side; Works, 9.402 and Works, 10.247fn on its spires. See also the earlier diary entry copied at Works, 8.xxxi.
