Filippo Calendario was executed, hanged between two columns of the Ducal Palace, on 15th April 1355 for his role in the Falier conspiracy. The Ducal Palace, in its 14th Century form has traditionally been attributed to him, though there are no contemporary documents confirming that attribution. See Notebook M2 p.42 for the evidence for the hanging from the Zancarol Chronicle. See Works, 11.247 for the Falier conspiracy; Works, 9.xxx for Ruskin’s frustration at what he saw as the ‘confusion’ of the historical record.; Works, 10.345 on Ruskin’s views on the interruption of work on the Ducal Palace caused by the execution of Calendario; Works, 11.247 on the evidence about Calendario that Ruskin was using and the problems of attribution.
