This is a side-heading. The reading ‘Apses’ seems certain. The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B reads ‘Apses ?’ omitting the full stop. It seems more likely that Ruskin wrote a full stop after apses and followed it not with a question mark but with a lower case ‘L’ to refer to the note on apses at Notebook M2 p.170L opposite this note. Compare the side notes at Notebook M2 p.179L and the top of Notebook M p.35 for a similar format. The shape of the lower case ‘l’ is not identical, but the meaning seems clear.
