This phrase is an insertion. The last word, given in The Ruskin Library Transcript T7B as ‘Caro’, is unclear, and is omitted as illegible in the Library Edition where the passage is reproduced at Works, 9.50f. ‘Lane’ seems a possible reading, and if so then perhaps the etchings of Theodore Lane (1800 - 1828) might fit with the ‘insipid grin and shaft straight nose’. However that possibility was not recognised in the Library Edition, and there do not appear to be any references to Theodore Lane in Ruskin’s published writings.
