‘a, b,’ is the reading of the Ruskin Library Transcript T7B. It misrepresents the manuscript and the meaning of the passage. Ruskin’s point is that a₁ and b₁ of the diagrams at Notebook M2 p.7backL are better than a and b on the same page.
