Proverbs 10.8 in the King James Version reads: “The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.”
Proverbs 10.10 in the King James Version reads: “He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.”
It is not altogether clear here whether, in Ruskin’s view, it is the “frequent expression” which is misrepresenting what is in Proverbs, or whether Proverbs has ‘misplaced’ the contrasting clauses of ‘the frequent expression’. If the latter it suggests that Ruskin is accepting that the Bible may be criticised by reference to what is commonly expressed.
“of the whole system of innuendo” is written as a quotation, with the spelling of ‘inuendo’ seeming to be as transcribed.
