of a dog, it's too dark to read.' Note how Groucho Marx uses the unusual and parallel complex prepositions 'outside of' and 'inside of' to make the contrast in this joke work. If he used the more normal 'apart from' for the first sentence, he couldn't use it or the second sentence (and he certainly couldn't get the contrast going).
