Task C - Our answer

DS

NRS

But don't think it is a good sign when they're nice to you, |

said old Miss Bex.

This sentence is a DS string followed by a reporting clause. The DS string has deictic properties consistently appropriate to Miss Bex's original utterance. The omission of the inverted commas helps us to see that the speech presented is not part of the ongoing interview but something the candidate remembers from an earlier time.
