Schooling: |
King attended his early education at David T. Howard Elementary School and Atlanta University Laboratory School. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and left before graduation due to his acceptance and early admission to Atlanta's Morehouse College in the fall of 1944. He earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951, and a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1955. |
Career: |
King became Miniter of a Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in 1954. He led the black boycott of segregated city bus lines and in 1956 gained major victory and prestige as a civil-rights leader when Montgomery buses began to operate on a desegregated basis. King organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which gave him a base to pursue further civil-rights activities, first in the South and later nationwide. |
Final years: |
In the mid 1960s King's interest widened from civil rights to criticism of the Vietnam war and deeper concern over poverty. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. |

On April 4th 1968, he was shot and killed as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. |
