Schooling:

Lodge was educated at the University College, London, from where he received a B.A. degree in 1955, and at the University of Birmingham from where he received his Ph.D. in 1967.

Career:

Lodge taught at the University of Birmingham from 1960 to 1987, during which time he wrote studies of Graham Greene (1966) and Evelyn Waugh (1971) along with other works of criticism dealing with modern literary theory. After retiring he became a full-time writer. He retains the title of Honorary Professor of Modern English Literature at Birmingham and continues to live in that city. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
