Born:

Chicago, 1888

Early years:

Chandler's parents divorced when he was seven and he went to England with his Irish-born Protestant mother.

Schooling:

Chandler was educated at DuIwich College and then spent a year in Paris and Germany preparing for the Civil Service entrance exam.

Career:

Dec. 19 - First poem, "The Unknown Love," published in Chambers's Journal.
His first novel, in 1939, was The Big Sleep, which introduced the detective Philip Marlowe. In the 40s, Chandler worked as a Hollywood scriptwriter. He had particular success with Double Indemnity (1944), for Billy Wilder, and Strangers on a Train (1951), for Alfred Hitchcock. Six of his novels were successfully filmed, including, Howard Hawk's film of The Big Sleep with Humphrey Bogart as Marlowe.

Final years:

In his last years he became something of a recluse, but after his wife's death he spent some time in London, where his social circle included Stephen Spender and Ian Fleming.
