A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ...

Born:

Lachine, Quebec, in 1915

Early years:

The youngest son of Russian Jewish parents, Saul Bellow was brought up in Montreal until 1924, when the family moved to Chicago.

Schooling:

He was educated at Tuley High School and the University of Chicago before transferring to Northwestern University, from where he graduated in 1937 having studied anthropology and sociology.

Career:

Bellow taught at a teacher training college in Chicago from 1938-42 and then worked for the editorial department of the Encyclopedia Britannica from 1943-44. During the war, he served in the merchant marines. In 1943, he travelled to Paris and Rome on a Guggenheim Fellowship. Since then he has travelled extensively, including visiting Israel in 1975.

Bellow has taught at various universities: Minnesota, Princeton, New York and the University of Puerto Rico. From 1960-2, he was the co-editor of The Noble Savage literary magazine and from 1962, became Professor of Social Thought at Chicago University.
