It was in 1787 when Austen made the decision to devote all her spare time to writing. In 1791 she wrote the parody of Oliver Goldsmith's History of England. She wrote her Juvenilia from 1787 to 1793. Early versions of the novels eventually published as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey were all begun worked on from 1795-1799. In 1803 Jane Austen actually sold Northanger Abbey (then titled Susan) for the sum of £10; however, the publisher decided not to publish it. After her father's death in 1805 she moved to Hampshire with her family where she started revising Sense and Sensibility, which was accepted in late 1810 or early 1811 by a publisher, for publication at her own risk. Encouraged by its success Austen turned to revising First Impressions. She sold it in November 1812 and it was published in January 1813. |
