Born: |
12th of March, 1928 in Washington D.C., USA |
Early years: |
Two weeks after his birth he was adopted by Reed and Frances Albee and was taken to live in the family home in Westchester, New York. |
Schooling: |
Albee attended the Cloate school from 1944 to 1946, when he enrolled at Trinity College, Connecticut, but he left it only after a year and a half. |
Career: |
After almost a decade of odd jobs and failed attempts to get his work published, Albee's breakthrough came shortly after his thirtieth birthday, when he wrote The Zoo Story in 1958. This was during a critical time of change in American Theatre because of the influence of the European Theatre of Absurd movement, pioneered by playwrights like Beckett, Genet and Pinter. Albee essentially established the American version of absurdist theatre. At first Albee had difficulties finding producers for his work, but after the Broadway success of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? he was accepted by the American Theatre establishment. He received a Tony Award and a Pulitzer nomination. |
