Accommodation
Q. Do I have to live at University?
A. No, you don't have to live away if you want to go to University. You
can stay at home and commute backwards and forwards for your seminars
and lectures, or you could choose to do something online. You don't always
have to go to the place to be able to learn. There are lots of different
options now and more universities are looking to encourage people to enjoy
the learning that they can experience at University but not actually have
to live there.
Q. Do I have to share a bedroom?
A. The majority of student bedrooms now are single study bedrooms so you
will have a bedroom to yourself.
Q. Do I need to pay bills in halls?
A. That varies depending on where you stay. Some universities offer an
inclusive package covering gas, electricity, water and also your connection
to the internet. Other universities ask for additional charges on top
of what they charge you for rent, for example your internet connection.
You need to read the literature and make the decision.
Q. Where do you live? On campus or off campus?
A. As a mature student I didn't want to end up with young students. I
applied for a family house and I live with a very nice family. I rent
a room there and use all their facilities and we get on really well. So
I live downtown.
Q. Do I have to share a bathroom?
A. It depends where you go to university and your choices about accommodation.
Most universities offer either en-suite accommodation (where you have
your own bathroom) or you can share a bathroom. It depends on your choice.
Q. Is there a curfew at University?
A. There is no real curfew at University but just be aware that if you
are coming in at 3 am then you may not be at your best for a 9 am class.
Q. What is the accommodation like at university?
A. Accommodation varies between institutions according to where you go
and how much you pay. People who want to save some money can go for the
lower end option and share a bathroom (rather than en-suite) and cater
for yourself (rather than have food provided for you). It is up to you
and how you want to do things.
Q. Can I live with my friends?
A. There is a variety of accommodation that universities offer students.
Sometimes they offer flats which you can rent with your friends. Other
people like to hire a house in the town from one of the university recognised
landlords and then you can live with your friends there.
Q. Can I bring my computer and television with me to University?
A. Yes as long as you don't overload the system and blow up the plug sockets!
If you bring your TV then you do need a TV licence. Even if someone else on
your corridor has a TV licence you should have an individual one for your
room. Bringing things that personalise your space and make you feel like
home are things that we would encourage.
Q. Can I have my friends to stay?
A. Each university has its own policy about friends and family coming
to visit. There are guest rooms on campus available for hire so that your
friends can come and stay with you at university.
