A writ of supersedeas (‘you shall desist’) is a legal instrument halting proceedings: ‘A writ of command to suspend the powers of an officer in certain cases, or to stay proceedings under another writ’ Blackstone. It has many applications: in this case, it casts doubt on the legality of the warrant issued by Sawrey, and so enables Fox to be released. In non-technical terms, Judge Fell threw out the warrant.
