A leaguer, from Dutch leger, 'somewhere where one lies', is a military term, meaning 'a. A military camp, esp. one engaged in a siege; an investing force' (OED sv leaguer n.). The soldiers and their wives were used to making camp, and the country people treated (?Brigham) churchyard like a fairground.
