Friends made a clear distinction between a ‘steeplehouse’ (the
building) and the ‘church’ (‘convinced’ and godly believers; those who had turned to the light within). In so
doing, they refused, as here, to see the former as synonymous with the latter, for ‘yt house was not ye: church;
butt ye: people w.ch Xt is ye: heade offe’.
