Friends made a clear distinction between a ‘steeplehouse’ (the building) and the ‘church’ (‘convinced’ and godly believers; those who had turned to the light within). In so doing, they refused, as here, to see the former as synonymous with the latter, for ‘y^t house was not y^e: church; butt y^e: people w.^ch X^t is y^e: heade offe’.
