Built by the Nevill family aroung 1400, probably by Ralph Nevill (Earl of Westmorland 1397). The castle was forfeited to the Crown after the 1569 (Catholic) Rising of the Northern Earls, and in 1629 Sir Henry Vane bought the freehold for £18,000.1. See also their website.
