It is not known where exactly Major Bousfield lived in Garsdale: possibly in the hamlet itself. David and Anthea Boulton suggest that Fox came across from Upper Dentdale by the track that runs from Cowgill to Dandra Garth.1 This would put him near the beginning of the west end of the road up to Grisedale; however, if he came across by the ‘Coal Road’, a continuation of the Galloway Gate or packhorse road from Scotland, he would arrive at its eastern branch: see the map.
