Kendal, Nether Bridge
The Nether (downstream) Bridge carried the main Lancaster/London road over the River Kent. It can be seen on Speed's 1611 map.
The existing bridge is fitted together in three slices: downstream the 17th-century packhorse bridge, then extended upstream in 1772 to accommodate the turnpike traffic, and further enlarged upstream in 1908. A good image by Matthew Emmott of all three stages, together with photos and information on Kendals other bridges, can be found on the Visit Cumbria website at http://www.visitcumbria.com/sl/kendal-bridges/.
This photo is taken from downstream. Beyond the bridge and lurking behind the conifer is the tower of Kendal parish church.
