Kendal, Nether Bridge

The Nether (downstream) Bridge carried the main Lancaster/London road over the River Kent. It can be seen on Speed's 1611 map.

The existing bridge is fitted together in three slices: downstream the 17th-century packhorse bridge, then extended upstream in 1772 to accommodate the turnpike traffic, and further enlarged upstream in 1908. This photo is taken from downstream. Beyond the bridge and lurking behind the conifer is the tower of Kendal parish church.
