Marsh Grange and the Duddon Sands, wth Black Combe in the background

Marsh Grange was the childhood home of Margaret Askew, later Margaret Fell. It is on the edge of the Duddon Sands near Kirby Ireleth. The massif in the background is Black Combe: the road to Whicham (now the A595) lies behind the hill in the foreground. This becomes the coast road to Bootle and Ravenglass, one possible route for Fox’s Cumberland expedition.
