Dendron Church in distance

Dendron Chapel of St Matthew was relatively new in 1652, having been built in 1642 ‘by Mr Dicconson, Citizen of London, decd, borne within a mile of ye place where ye Chappell is erected, builded, and ffinished’. In 1650 the inhabitants wished it to be converted into a parish church with a full-time minister, as the benefaction would have covered the stipend, but this did not happen until 1671. Fox refers to it as ‘a Chapell beyonde Gleeston: w.ch was built but neuer preist had preacht in it’. Dickinson also provided for a school.
