Activism and Governance
in Manchester and Auckland
'Placing Voluntary Activism' is a two year, comparative study of the experiences of people who are active in local voluntary and community organizations in Manchester, UK and Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand.
It
examines the material importance of place for understanding the interrelationships between urban governance partnerships and community/voluntary sector activism.
In particular, the project is concerned with the ways in which different social, historical, and cultural contexts within and across neoliberal states impact on the development of voluntary activism in the sub-sectors of mental health and community safety.
Launched in November 2005, the project is based in the Institute for Health Research at Lancaster University and is being conducted by a research team drawn from the
Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, and Bristol in the UK and the University of Auckland in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
